Members of the Congressional and Senate Chicken Caucuses recently requested an extension to the implementation of the updated Packers and Stockyards Act.
The chicken caucuses expressed concern with the Transparency in Poultry Grower Contracting and Tournaments rule, which is set to go into effect on Feb. 12.
“The provisions in the rule requiring certain terms be included in contracts are so novel that it appears the industry could have to amend nearly every contract—tens of thousands in total—in just two months over three major federal holidays,” the letter read.
The caucuses said 75 days is not enough time for the rule to be implemented and requested an extension of at least 180 days.
Earlier in the week, more than 60 ag groups wrote to President Joe Biden, expressing concern with the finalization of the Packers and Stockyards Act, writing “We are concerned that the slow pace of progress by USDA on some of the actions specified in your executive order will jeopardize their effectiveness.”
Letter signatories included Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America and various other farming and conservation groups.
