While U.S. retail sales of refrigerated plant-based meat alternatives have sharply declined, frozen alternatives show signs of stability, according to new data from market information company Circana.

In the year leading up to Sept. 29, combined sales of refrigerated and frozen plant-based meat dropped by 9% to $1.1 billion, with volumes down 9.9%. Notably, refrigerated alternatives (29% of the category) saw a year-over-year decline of 22.8% to $22.6 million, while frozen options (71% of the category) declined only 1.3%, totaling $54.3 million.

By contrast, traditional refrigerated and frozen meat sales rose 5.5% and 8.3%, respectively.
