Nebraska became the sixth state to pass legislation banning lab-grown meat in the state.

On May 20, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen (R) signed Legislative Bill 246 into law, which prohibits lab-grown protein food products under the Nebraska Pure Food Act.

“These products are grown from harvested cells in bioreactor machines,” Pillen said. “The health consequences are unknown and so are the long-term effects to consumers.”

The bill bans the production, sale, promotion and distribution of lab-grown meat in the state. Nebraska joins Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Montana and Indiana as the states that have passed bans on lab-grown meat.
