The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) proudly announces George Eidsness as the 2026 Citizen of the West. This prestigious award recognizes those who embody the spirit and determination of the Western pioneer—a true representative of Western lifestyle, ideals, agricultural heritage and traditions. A committee of community leaders selects recipients.
George Eidsness is a true embodiment of the Citizen of the West—a resilient visionary and deeply rooted in the land and traditions that define the region. Raised on a farm near Brocket, ND, George’s early life was shaped by hard work, music (specifically the trombone), horsemanship and a deep respect for agriculture. From riding horses to showing cattle in 4-H, his connection to the land and livestock started early and has remained a guiding force throughout his life.
After marrying his wife, Barbara, and earning a degree from the University of North Dakota, George started his business career in Fargo, ND, eventually relocating to Colorado. In 1990, he and his wife purchased Transwest Trucks, a move that would solidify their role as influential leaders in both the agricultural and transportation industries. Their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence helped grow Transwest into a respected enterprise serving communities across the West.
George’s passion for preserving Western heritage led him to acquire Steamboat Lake Outfitters in 1996 and later the Flying E Ranch near Fort Lupton, CO. These ventures allowed him to blend business acumen with a love for horses, trail riding and hunting—activities that celebrate the rugged beauty and traditions of the West. His unexpected introduction to team penning sparked a new chapter, where he competed alongside family and friends, earning accolades and fostering community through sport.
A lifetime member of the United States Team Penning Association and a 2023 Hall of Fame inductee, George’s contributions extend beyond business and horsemanship. He has championed many nonprofits and supported youth in agriculture through 4-H, FFA and other youth programs. In all his endeavors, George has embodied and promoted the values of integrity, perseverance and stewardship.
George and Barbara have been longtime sponsors of the Stock Show, the Auction of Junior Livestock Champions, Citizen of the West and the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale. George is a National Western trustee and a vice chair of the capital campaign to build the National Western’s new home. His leadership at the National Western and in his other endeavors reflects a deep commitment to the land, the people, and the enduring spirit of the American West.
George Eidsness will be honored as the 47th Citizen of the West during the annual award dinner on Jan. 12, 2026. Proceeds from the event support the National Western Scholarship Trust, awarding 100 scholarships to students attending colleges and universities in Colorado and Wyoming for agricultural science, rural medicine, or veterinary medicine studies.
