Montana and Indiana have become the fourth and fifth states to ban lab-grown meat in the country.
Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) signed House Bill (HB) 401 into law on May 1, which prohibits the manufacture, sale and distribution of lab-grown meat.
Just five days later, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R) signed HB 1425 into law, which bans lab-grown meat for two years and then implements strict labeling laws after the ban expires.
“The lab-grown meat sector will continue to face headwinds as consumers and lawmakers learn more about the use of ‘immortalized cells’ and the lack of long-term nutritional and health studies around the product,” said Jack Hubbard, executive director of the Center for the Environment and Welfare, one of the leading critics of lab-grown meat.
