Henry Gordon began to see some staleness in his fed cattle and decided to add Red Angus genetics to freshen carcass quality.

Montana Stockgrowers Foundation’s (MSF) Cattle Drive Program is raising the “steaks” by partnering with Montana breed associations to incentivize quality cattle genetics.

The Montana Angus, Hereford, Red Angus and Simmental associations have pledged a combined $20,000 in awards for the program. Donors will receive carcass and gain data, along with DNA parentage information on their steers. DNA samples will determine if the steer is sired by a registered bull from the participating breed associations. The top three in each category will be recognized at the Montana Stockgrowers Association Annual Convention, with an overall grand champion steer awarded for the first time.

“We are excited for the breed associations to be partnering with us in this program. We believe this is going to elevate the program and highlight the quality genetics that we have right here in Montana.” said Monty Lesh, co-chair of the Cattle Drive Committee.
