Mississippi has joined Florida and Alabama in banning lab-grown meat in the state.

House Bill 1006 was enacted on March 21 and will prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of food products produced from cultured animal cells beginning July 1. Any person found in violation of the law will face fines up to $500 or jail time for up to three months. Retail food establishments could lose their licenses if they sell or distribute lab-grown meat products.

The bill passed unanimously through the legislature and though Gov. Tate Reeves (R) did not sign it, he did not veto it either, leading to its passage as law.
