Reps. Harriet Hageman (R-WY-At large) and Ro Khanna (D-CA-17) reintroduced the Country of Origin Labeling Enforcement Act, which would reinstate mandatory country-of-origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef.

“The U.S. abandoned MCOOL for beef in 2016 following a World Trade Organization ruling,” Hageman said. “This change lifted the profit margins of monopolistic big packers at the expense of the American rancher.”

The legislation would prohibit retailers from designating the U.S. as the country of origin for foreign beef, with fines of $5,000 for each pound of beef not in compliance.

The bill is supported by the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, USA (R-CALF).

“Consumers deserve the right to choose to buy imported beef or beef from America’s ranchers, and ranchers deserve the right to compete in their own domestic market,” said R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard.
