Today’s slaughter is estimated to be 116,000 head, 1,000 head above the previous week.
“The historically small slaughter of recent weeks is providing important support for boxed beef values during this slow seasonal timeframe and this week’s slaughter guesses are in the 530k to 535k head range compared to 536k last week and 562k a year ago,” Cassie Fish, market analyst, wrote in The Beef. “That would beat 2015 and 2016, which were both sub-530k for this week. There is talk that next week’s slaughter will be sub-530k head.”
Boxed beef prices were lower on 111 loads, with the Choice cutout down 21 cents to $367.55 and the Select cutout $2.45 lower to $362.90.
