The city of Lexington, NE, is pursuing a deal to acquire and manage some of Tyson Foods’ assets, according to the April 28 meeting minutes of the Lexington City Council.
The move follows the company shutting down its beef packing plant earlier this year, ceasing operations for its 5,000-head-per-day facility and laying off about 3,000 employees. Negotiated agreements include the acquisition of property east of the Tyson plant, west of the Tyson wastewater facility and the Tyson wastewater facility. The agreements also include access to the rail spur connected to the Union Pacific railway.
“I’m encouraged to hear the City of Lexington will acquire and manage Tyson-owned assets to boost economic and job opportunities in the area,” said Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer (R) in an X post. “I look forward to seeing this plan move forward and working with the city to build a strong future.”
