Comments for a proposed change in Alaska’s sport hunting regulations that drew massive public outcry are coming due Sept. 6. The proposed rule would reverse a 2015 National Park Service final rule that banned certain types of sport hunting take of bears, wolves, coyotes, and caribou in national preserves in Alaska.
The current proposal would reinstate regulations allowing such things as hunting black and brown bears over bait and/or with lights at den sites, taking any black bears including sows with cubs and cubs, using dogs to hunt black bears, taking wolves and coyotes during denning season, and taking swimming caribou or hunting caribou from a motorboat under power.
As of press time, there were over 115,000 comments and considerable public outcry over the hunting practices the proposed change would again allow.
