The U.S. rejected China’s request for $2.4 billion in compensatory sanctions on Oct. 28.
The sanctions were requested for the U.S.’s failure to comply with a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling, sending it to arbitration, Geneva trade officials said.
Judges said the U.S. failed to comply with a WTO ruling about tariffs it put on Chinese solar panels, wind towers and steel cylinders and Beijing could impose retaliatory sanctions if Washington did not remove the tariffs.
Washington challenged the ruling and the compensation sought, and sent it to WTO arbitration to decide on the amount.
The case dates back to the Obama administration but showcases continuing White House complaints about the WTO.
