South Dakota State University (SDSU) and the University of Minnesota (UM) have teamed up to form a professional program in veterinary medicine, leading to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM).
Once students have completed pre-veterinary requisites, the program will allow students to complete the first two years of their vet med education at SDSU and the final two years at UM’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
The new program will focus on rural practices and help address the veterinarian shortage.
“This professional degree addresses the need for more veterinarians in South Dakota and adjoining states, particularly those who work with food animals,” says John Killefer, South Dakota Corn Endowed Dean of the SDSU College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
The first class of 20 students is expected to begin classes on the SDSU campus in August 2021.
