On a vote of 52-47, the scaled-down version of the coronavirus relief bill proposed by the Senate Republicans was defeated.
The $650 billion measure was significantly smaller than legislation proposed by Republican leaders earlier this summer. According to the Associated Press (AP), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said it is “sad” there will be no virus aid deal before the November elections.
The AP also states “barring a breakthrough that looks unlikely now” a short-term spending measure averting a government shutdown and a postelection session to deal with any unfinished business is all that is left.
