Legal Ledger Brief: Producer sued for E. coli outbreak

New Seasons Market and New Leaf Community Markets, a grocery store chain, recently sued Oregon-based beef producer Country Natural Beef, alleging the producer was the source of three E. coli illnesses linked to the store’s ground beef sales.

New Seasons immediately ceased ground beef sales for three months and refunded all returned beef products. An investigation traced the contamination back to Country Natural Beef.

New Seasons is now suing the producer for property damages, which include expenses for issuing and implementing the recall, disposing of the beef products, cleaning stores, and investigating the outbreak source, among others.

The grocery store chain claims the damages total at least $2,712,275.48.
