Legal Ledger Brief: Private property legislation introduced

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY-At large) recently introduced legislation to protect private property rights from potential overreach under the Biden administration’s America the Beautiful (30×30) plan.

The legislation would enact that Section 216 of Executive Order 14008 would have no force or effect, which pertains to conserving lands and waters. The bill also would prevent the federal government from acquiring private property from owners who do not wish to sell their land. Private property owners would also not be subject to adopting conservation practices developed under the 30×30 plan.

The Wyoming Stock Growers Association applauded the measure. “Passage of this legislation will enable us to return to addressing natural resource management decisions based on sound science and economic analysis, not on political expediency,” said Jim Magagna, executive vice president of the group.
