The Oregon Senate voted 25-3 on Senate Bill 580.
The bill seeks to ban the use of M-44 cyanide devices, which are often used to control coyotes that prey on sheep.
Supporters of the ban have argued that their use is indiscriminate and can cause harm to people and pets who might encounter them.
The ban was sponsored by state Sen. Floyd Prozanzki (D-4) and Rep. David Gomberg (D-10).
In previous stories by WLJ on the topic of the cyanide devices, Chase Adams—policy and information director for the American Sheep Industry Association—has called the use of M-44 “tremendously important” to the nation’s sheep industry.
“The M-44 is the most targeted device we have specifically targeted at those problem coyotes.”
