The New York Times recently published an article about cattle’s impact on climate change. However, this article might not be the kind you were expecting.
In the piece titled, Belching Cows and Endless Feedlots: Fixing Cattle’s Climate Issues, by Henry Fountain, the author highlights the improvements the cattle industry has made to increase efficiency that has reduced the impact on the climate.
National Cattlemen’s Beef Association said the story was “remarkably, pretty fair and balanced.”
Here is an excerpt from the story: “In the United States, cattle are far from the largest source of greenhouse gases, which include carbon dioxide, methane and others. Their total contribution is dwarfed by the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, transportation and industry… In effect, the animals are recycling carbon over a short time frame, so if the cattle population remains roughly the same, the contribution to warming remains about the same.”
