Legal Ledger Brief: Judge alters Monsanto cancer award

On Monday, Oct. 22, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Suzanne Bolanos made some changes to a recent ruling regarding the Monsanto glyphosate cancer case. While she upheld the jury’s verdict that groundskeeper DeWayne Johnson’s cancer (lymphoma) was caused by RoundUp (glyphosate), a product of Monsanto, she reduced the punitive damages awarded by the jury from $289 million to $79 million.

According to the Associated Press, Johnson’s attorney opposed the reduced damages but said, “We are pleased the court did not disturb the verdict.”

Conversely, Monsanto spokesman Daniel Childs said the company appreciated the reduced damages award but still plans to appeal the verdict, asserting that there is no scientific evidence showing that the product causes cancer.
