The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Nov. 8 it arrested two foreign nationals—one from Russia and the other from Ukraine—for deploying Sodinokibi/REvil ransomware to cyberattack businesses in the U.S.
JBS was a victim of such an attack this summer, when it was forced to cease operations after an attack in June. Yaroslav Vasinskyi was charged with conducting ransomware attacks against multiple victims, as well as Yevgeniy Polyanin, who was in possession of $6.1 million in funds from ransom payments.
The two individuals would access internal computer networks of companies and then deploy the ransomware to encrypt the data on the computers, according to the DOJ. If convicted of all of their charges, each attacker faces 115 years and 145 years in prison, respectively
