Kyodo News reported Japan would temporarily impose higher beef tariffs on the U.S., as imports are expected to exceed the maximum limit set by the Japan-U.S. trade agreement that took effect last year.
According to Japanese customs data, the country had imported 233,112 tons of U.S. beef by the end of February, just below the maximum 242,000 tons agreed for this fiscal year.
If the amount is exceeded, tariffs will rise from 25.8 to 38.5 percent for 30 days. It would be the first time that a quota tariff measure has been imposed on U.S. beef since August 2017, Kyodo News said.
