The Texas Animal Health Commission received a report of equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in a hunter jumper horse visiting Texas from Wyoming.
The horse traveled to Katy, TX, to participate in an event that began on Jan. 29.
The horse was immediately isolated and relocated to a Brazos County vet hospital after showing symptoms of EHM.
Horses known to be in contact with the horse were in an isolated area and are now under quarantine and monitoring.
“I believe the attentiveness and quick actions taken by the event veterinarian and staff will help contain the disease and mitigate the risk of spread,” said Dr. Susan Rollo, Texas state epidemiologist.
Owners who attended the event should clean and disinfect all equipment; isolate any horses that were in attendance for several weeks; monitor temperature; and wash hands frequently.
Symptoms of EHM may include weakness, incoordination, loss of tail tone and urine dribbling.
