A group of 15 GOP governors submitted an open letter to President Joe Biden on April 21, voicing their concerns with his 30×30 Plan to conserve 30 percent of all land and water in the U.S.
In the letter, the governors wrote that they were unaware of any constitutional or statutory authority for the president or any federal agency to set aside and permanently conserve 30 percent of land and water. Additionally, the governors alleged that reaching the conservation goal would limit current productive uses of lands and infringe on private property rights, harming the economy.
The letter said more than two months have passed since the program was announced and there has been limited information provided, and significant questions remain. The governors concluded the letter by stating states are not simply stakeholders to consult, but essential partners in developing policies.
The letter was signed by the governors of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.
