The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has determined the Lower Colorado River Basin’s distinct population segment of roundtail chub does not warrant listing under the Endangered Species Act, and it will also consider delisting the Gila chub.
A 2017 study revealed the roundtail, headwater and Gila chubs are all a single species. USFWS determined the primary threats to the Lower Colorado River roundtail chub are nonnative species and natural stream flow alterations, but the threats do not pose a risk of extinction for the species.
The agency is accepting comments on its proposal to remove the Gila chub from the list of endangered species. To submit comments, visit regulations.gov and search for docket ID FWS-R2-ES-2022-0001, or mail to Public Comments Processing, Attn: FWS-R2-ES-2022-0001, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, MS: PRB/3W, 5275 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22041-3803.
