With deer season just getting started, hunters are urged to take extra precautions due to an outbreak of chronic wasting disease.
The disease is an always-fatal neurological disease of the deer family, which includes white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk and moose.
Symptoms of affected deer are “zombie-like,” with stumbling, drooling and eventual death. Even healthy-looking deer can be affected.
It is recommended that potentially-infected deer are not eaten until lab tests are done, which can be conducted by Division of Wildlife Resources staff.
More than half of the states in the U.S. have had infections by chronic wasting disease.
