The Animal Legal Defense Fund and Earthjustice filed a lawsuit against the USDA under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain records of the Agricultural Marketing Service’s oversight of the Beef Checkoff program.

The groups said the agency continues to run false and misleading beef production advertisements and promotional campaigns about environmental marketing claims. “Industrial beef production is a significant contributor to the climate crisis as the industry is a major source of methane, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gas emissions, and is responsible for biodiversity loss, deforestation, and excessive water use,” the environmentalist groups said.
