More than 100 environmental organizations penned an open letter to JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and other private banks, calling on them to stop financing meat and dairy companies.
“This funding accelerates climate change, drives catastrophic biodiversity loss, exacerbates food insecurity and damages animal welfare and human rights,” the groups wrote. The letter continues that global private banks should halt all new financing that allows for livestock production expansion, require all clients to disclose climate targets and action plans, and address “additional social and environmental harms from industrial livestock production.”
The letter concludes: “Halting bank financing of industrial livestock production would immediately and significantly improve banks’ emissions equation, demonstrate a commitment to addressing climate and nature-related impacts and deliver benefits to the planet, people and the banks.”
The letter is signed by 105 organizations, including Center for Biological Diversity, Earth Guardians, Family Farm Defenders, Friends of the Earth, Humane Society International and others.
