Funding awarded for antimicrobial dashboard

Researchers at K-State have conducted an analysis of many large midwestern feedlots and found that the cattle and beef industry could lose $1.8 billion if metaphylaxis—the pre-emptive mass treatment of pens of high health-risk cattle with antimicrobials—is no longer an option. The lightest-weight class of cattle would lose about $104/head in reduced average daily gains

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has awarded nearly $5 million across eight projects to enhance antimicrobial resistance (AMR) dashboard tools.

Partnering with several universities, these initiatives aim to monitor AMR trends, identify emerging resistance profiles and explore links between antimicrobial use, animal health practices and resistance. The agency said the dashboards will feature robust data protections and provide valuable insights into AMR in livestock, poultry and companion animals, fostering improved public and animal health strategies.
