USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will implement a new system of testing for veterinary drug residue in beef muscle samples starting Oct. 1.
The new method entitled “quantitation of animal drug residues by high-resolution, accurate-mass liquid chromatography mass spectrometry” will be able to measure the amounts of multiple veterinary drug residues at once with high accuracy, measure some veterinary drugs that were hard to measure before, keep the traditional method of testing for some substances, match the limits for detecting residues with the allowed levels, and make it faster to get results for positive residues.
FSIS also announced it is updating three new methods to the new Chemical Laboratory Guidebook format: Quantitation of Salt; Quantitation of Fat; and Screening, Quantitation, and Confirmation of Beta-Agonists by UHPLC-MS-MS. By reformatting these methods, FSIS aims to improve accessibility and provide clarity for users.
