USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) endorsed a new agreement to speed rail exports of U.S. meat and poultry to Mexico.
Under the plan, Mexico’s National Service of Agri-Food, Health, Safety and Quality inspectors will work inside selected federally inspected U.S. plants to reinspect and clear shipments at the source. This eliminates routine border checks, cutting delays and costs while ensuring product safety. The voluntary program, a first for the sector, imposes no new requirements on exporters.
Mexico is America’s top meat and poultry buyer, importing over $5.5 billion in 2024.
