Fischer reintroduces ag hauler bill

New legislation was introduced last week in the U.S. Senate by Sens. John Hoeven (R-ND) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) to reform rules regarding electronic logging devices and hours of service for commercial truck drivers hauling livestock. Pictured is one of Mark Yazel’s cattle trucks. Yazel

In mid-December, Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) reintroduced the Haulers of Agriculture and Livestock Safety (HAULS) Act.

The HAULS Act would eliminate the requirement that ag and livestock hours-of-service (HOS) exemptions only apply during designated planting and harvesting seasons.

In addition, the legislation would amend the definition of “agricultural commodities” based on feedback from industry groups. The bill would also authorize a 150 air-mile exemption from HOS requirements on the destination side for ag commodity haulers.

“Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers feed and fuel our world, but burdensome regulations make it harder for their goods to be transported,” Fischer said.
