FDA authorizes drug for NWS in dogs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted its first-ever Emergency Use Authorization approving Credelio (lotilaner) chewable tablets to treat New World screwworm (NWS) in dogs.

Officials determined the medication’s potential benefits outweigh known risks, especially for dogs near the U.S.-Mexico border or those traveling from regions with active cases. Credelio’s active ingredient is commonly used against parasites, though neurologic side effects such as tremors or seizures may occur. The product is available only by veterinary prescription to ensure proper monitoring and care.
