The Department of Justice’s antitrust division (DOJ) is reportedly investigating whether the Big Four packers engaged in anticompetitive behavior, the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg each reported.
The outlets reported that sources said DOJ lawyers are investigating Cargill, JBS, National Beef and Tyson Foods.
The DOJ has not officially confirmed any investigation.
Last fall, President Donald Trump called on the DOJ to investigate meat packing companies “who are driving up the price of Beef through Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing, and Price Manipulation.”
The DOJ began an investigation into the companies during Trump’s first term, which the Biden administration continued before the DOJ closed the probe last year.
