Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is investigating the death of a mountain lion that was killed by a man with a shovel near Cañon City, CO, after it approached the man and his dog at a campground.

The man alleged that the 95-pound female lion came within 10 feet of his husky, prompting him to strike the lion in the head. A CPW officer’s preliminary findings suggest the man acted in self-defense. The lion had injuries on its paw and back, and its body was sent for necropsy.

Although CPW continues to investigate the incident, the agency said the incident does not qualify as a mountain lion attack because the man suffered no injuries and was never touched by the animal.
