In late May, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed House Bill 25-1023 into law, which will mandate government review for certain fencing projects in the Sangre de Cristo land grant area.

The area spans more than 1 million acres in the San Luis Valley and Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado. The bill goes into effect July 1 and requires a person to submit an application to the local government to install or fix fence of a certain size.

“This important law ensures fencing projects are better evaluated for environmental responsibility and to ensure continued historic access to these lands,” Polis wrote in a Facebook post.
