The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) released a new mapping tool designed to provide location information on gray wolves equipped with GPS collars.
The Wolf Location Automated Mapping System shows the approximate location of GPS-collared wolves across the state and is intended to help livestock producers understand the wolves’ movement. The collars collect location data about four times a day and transmit the locations to CDFW each morning. The department noted that the location of a wolf on the map is approximate and not reflective of their exact or current location.
“CDFW is focused on transparency, best practices, and ensuring impacted communities have the knowledge they need to help prevent conflict,” said CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham. “We will continue to partner with ranchers and communities to navigate a positive path forward.”
