The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is launching helicopter-based wildlife capture operations across Northern California in January to collar deer, elk and wolves with GPS tracking devices.

Deer and elk captures will occur across more than a dozen counties, while wolf capture efforts will focus on Siskiyou, Lassen and Tehama counties, with possible work in Modoc, Shasta and Plumas counties. Captured wolves will be released on nearby suitable public lands after processing.

For wolves, CDFW will share location data with cattle and sheep producers to help reduce conflicts, though the collars are not real-time. Operations will occur on lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and cooperating private landowners.
