A local cattlemen’s association in Washington is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for tips leading to a conviction in a case involving cattle being shot. The Capital Press reports that the Stevens County Cattlemen’s Association (SCCA) is offering the reward in response to the shooting of cattle in Stevens and Ferry counties. An anonymous donor contributed $15,000 to the fund to boost the reward from the previous amount of $2,500. SCCA President Justin Hedrick told Capital Press that an estimated 50 cows have been shot on private and public lands in the two counties in the last five years. Some cattlemen have speculated that the shootings are in response to conflicts with wolves. Anyone with information can contact the SCCA at 509-680-3497, or the sheriff’s office in Ferry County at 509-775-3132 or Stevens County at 509-684-5296. — WLJ
