Americans are consuming more protein than ever, according to Cargill’s 2025 Protein Profile.

In 2024, 61% of U.S. consumers increased their protein intake, up from 48% in 2019. Animal proteins like beef, chicken and eggs remain popular for their nutrition, taste and versatility. Rising food costs have consumers redefining value—54% are turning to affordable staples like ground beef and chicken, while 37% buy in bulk and freeze portions.

Social media plays a significant role in influencing choices, with 52% trying new foods seen online. Portable protein snacks like jerky, yogurt and shakes support the growing demand for convenience and high-protein lifestyles.
