Cargill has introduced Boston Dynamics’ four-legged robot, Spot, at its Amsterdam Multiseed crush and refinery plant to enhance safety and reliability.
Equipped with AI-driven sensors, Spot performs 10,000 autonomous inspections weekly, detecting hazards such as overheating, leaks or ventilation faults. The robot has already prevented costly downtime by identifying equipment running above safe limits, the company said. “Spot gives us peace of mind overnight and helps us wake up to data—not surprises,” said plant superintendent Martin Blommestijn.
Beyond maintenance, Spot improves workplace safety by scanning for hazards and freeing employees to focus on data-informed decisions. Cargill plans to expand Spot’s deployment across Europe, advancing predictive, digital-first manufacturing and investing in safer food production.
