Following a monthlong suspension, tariffs on Canada and Mexico were still on track to go in effect in early March.
At a White House press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, President Donald Trump said the tariffs “are going forward on time, on schedule.”
The 25% tariffs on imports from the two countries are set to go into effect on March 4, with reciprocal tariffs on foreign nations set to start on April 2. These are separate from the blanket 25% tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum, which will go into effect on March 12.
“We would need to be reaching important agreements this Friday,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters ahead of Trump’s remarks. “On all of the issues there is communication and what we need is to complete this agreement, I believe we’re in a place to do it.”
