Brazil will mandate cattle traceability beginning in 2027, with full implementation expected by 2032.
The National Plan for the Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffaloes will introduce traceability in phases, requiring electronic identification for certain groups in 2027 and comprehensive herd identification by January 2033. Ranchers will face the costs of implementing electronic devices and no tax incentives or funding provisions are included in the plan. The Ministry of Agriculture is also considering banning the use of fire-branding as a traceability measure.
“We can access the most restrictive and remunerative markets with this traceability,” said Brazil Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro. “We will accelerate the accession process.”
