Beef Bits Brief: Plant-based Wagyu in Japan

Canadian-based food manufacturer Top Tier Foods is planning to introduce plant-based Wagyu to Japan by the end of the year.

The plant-based product is made from soy and the first product launched will be teriyaki strips slow cooked in soup. The announcement has sparked controversy in the country, with some in the food industry applauding the increasing popularity of plant-based products, and others up in arms about the use of “Wagyu” for a plant-based product. The debate is very similar to ongoing debates in the U.S. about food and meat labeling.
