A report from Bloomberg said Americans are likely to decrease their meat consumption for the first time in six years.
Research at the University of Missouri estimates this year’s per-capita meat consumption will fall for the first time since 2014. This is a result of the higher meat prices from decreased processing capacity during the pandemic, as well as a reduction in disposable income.
A survey by the university showed more than half of Americans think the food industry should focus more on meat-free foods to ease meat processing shortages, the report read.
Per-capita meat consumption levels are unlikely to return to 2019’s levels until 2025, the research estimated.
