Beef Bits Brief: Cargill “beefs up” sustainability

In an attempt to “do more with less impact,” Cargill is launching BeefUp Sustainability, an initiative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 30 percent by 2030.

The effort will focus on four key areas: grazing management; feed production; innovation; and food waste reduction. Reducing GHG by 30 percent would equate to removing two million cars from U.S. highways for a year.

Jon Nash, Cargill’s North American protein business lead, notes the “strong environmental stewardship work already led by farmers and ranchers,” but sustainable agricultural practices can be expanded to make more of a difference.

The company plans to expand its partnership with The Nature Conservancy, as well as work with farmers and ranchers on grazing management planning and adaptive management.
