Anna’s Comments: The road ahead

There is a saying in agriculture that no two years are ever the same. Markets shift and weather changes, adding new challenges and volatility with every new season. Through every change, one thing remains constant: the people in this industry continue to adapt while staying grounded in their values.

The same can be said for the Western Livestock Journal. Since 1922, our commitment has been simple. We strive to provide our readers with timely, unbiased coverage of the issues that matter most to cattle producers across the West. That mission has never changed, and if anything, it has become even more central to every decision we make. The people behind WLJ remain committed to providing accurate news coverage and creating marketing opportunities for the businesses that make this industry thrive.

Just like the successful rancher never settles with the status quo, we believe publications should never stop looking for ways to better serve their readers. We recognize the need to evolve and modernize with the changing times, which includes a greater emphasis on digital platforms. As such, we are diligently working on expanding WLJ’s digital offerings to better engage with our readers and advertisers.

We have some exciting developments in the works that we hope to share with everyone in the near future. But don’t worry, our print publications aren’t going anywhere. Print remains a key part of our mission and will continue to be a priority. We’re just adding a few more ways to connect with our readers and help our advertisers reach them.

We are also pleased to introduce the next chapter of this Comments column, which has served as a voice for WLJ leadership for generations. This space will soon evolve to feature perspectives from additional respected industry leaders. Alongside these new voices, you will continue to hear from our field representatives, who share valuable insights from the regions they serve.

Our news coverage and market reporting will continue to provide the reliable information readers depend on to make informed business decisions. These fundamentals remain at the heart of what we have done for the last nearly 104 years. The addition of new perspectives is just that—an addition that adds to the coverage our readers already know and trust.

Agriculture has never been an industry built on one perspective. Each producer has different experiences shaped by something as simple as their geography, or more complex like their history of family traditions. Some of the best ideas in agriculture have come from visiting a neighbor’s operation, chatting with a cup of coffee in hand at the local sale barn café or even touring ranches far from home through opportunities such as the annual Livestock Tours trip.

These relationships with fellow countrymen and women are the backbone of this industry. For generations, business has often been conducted with little more than a handshake and a person’s word. Without that trust and integrity, our ranching communities would not be where they are today. Those same values are something we don’t take lightly at WLJ. From our field representatives visiting with ranchers across the West, to our editorial and advertising teams working behind the scenes each week, WLJ has always been shaped by people who care about this industry.

The agriculture industry built the playbook on balancing tradition with progress. No one understands evolution better than farmers and ranchers. They make decisions every day that improve efficiency and profitability while never losing sight of the sincerity and grit that define the industry. Success often comes not from choosing between tradition and innovation, but from understanding how the two work together. We believe the work we do as a publication should be no different.

As we enter a new era, and welcome more perspectives and expand our digital reach, we hope to provide our readers with additional ideas and insight while maintaining the independent reporting that has always been central to WLJ’s identity.

Change is a part of every successful operation. As we continue to invest in the future of our publications, we remain committed to earning the trust of our readers, whether they have read WLJ for the past 30 years or the last 30 days. Ultimately, our responsibility remains the same today as it did in 1922: to serve the ranchers, families and businesses who depend on this publication every week. We thank you for your continued support, and for the privilege of continuing to be the nation’s leading source of livestock and agriculture news. — ANNA MILLER FORTOZO
