The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) plan to gather more than 3,000 feral horses from Wyoming’s “checkerboard” lands is likely delayed until the summer of 2026.
The BLM’s plans have been appealed, delayed and then found to be illegal by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, according to a WyoFile report. BLM still planned to continue with the gathers in October, which resulted in lawsuits by horse advocacy groups. The advocacy groups told WyoFile that BLM’s plans have since changed.
“Late yesterday afternoon we heard from the Justice Department, which represents BLM, that … the roundup is not happening this year,” Bill Eubanks, an attorney for the petitioners, told WyoFile on Sept. 11. “It won’t happen before summer of 2026. That’s all we know. It’s just a written assurance by counsel.” Parties will meet in early October to consider amendments to a Resource Management Plan for the horse herds.
