Mexican gray wolf

USDA APHIS

Female Mexican gray wolf 2996 has crossed north of Interstate 40 in New Mexico, near Mount Taylor and “Lobo Canyon,” a region praised by conservationists as ideal wolf habitat.

According to Defenders of Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has no plans to capture her. The wolf is the third female in three years to head toward Colorado, venturing beyond the experimental population area. Craig Miller, senior Arizona representative of Defenders of Wildlife, called the wolf’s journey a tribute to ancestors who once roamed from Canada to Mexico, expressing hope for future generations.
