President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in North Dakota due to wildfires that affected McKenzie and Williams counties from Oct. 5-6, 2024.
With the declaration, federal assistance will support state, Tribal and local recovery efforts, including emergency work and facility repair on a cost-sharing basis. Hazard mitigation funding is also available statewide.
Jacob Just of the North Dakota Insurance Department said the agency will collaborate with fire departments to reduce future risks, according to the North Dakota Monitor. The state fire marshal identified natural gas flares, high winds and dry vegetation as contributing factors to the two fires.
