WI confirms first HPAI case in dairy

Wisconsin agriculture officials have confirmed the state’s first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle after detection in a Dodge County herd.

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed the case, with verification by federal laboratories. The affected farm has been quarantined, and sick animals are being isolated. USDA officials say pasteurization protects the milk supply, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the risk to humans low.

State officials urge livestock and poultry owners to register premises, monitor animal health and strengthen biosecurity practices.
